The point of a crosswalk is to encourage safety and communication between pedestrians and motorists. So why a rainbow crosswalk? You might be wondering why some colourful paint on the road would be beneficial to a community facing much larger issues than safely crossing the street, but let me explain…
Rainbow crosswalks are a creative and simple way for the Township to show that we are accepting and proud of the LGTBTQ+ community. They do this by raising awareness and visibility of the rainbow flag more than just in the month of June.
Something like a rainbow crosswalk may seem silly, but it is just the opposite. It is the best way to signify allyship and acceptance within a community. As a queer woman, if I came across a town with rainbow crosswalks, I would already begin to feel safer in my surroundings. I would view the Township that I am in as one that would accept me for who I am and protect me to the best of their ability.
So, yes, crosswalks are meant for safety and communication in roadways - but I think it is also crucial in representing the safety and communication between the LGBTQ+ community and where we live.
